In his earlier days, he’s known as one of the most fearsome and respected combatants, though that is under some protest depending on the origin you choose to believe.
Who Is Volstagg?
Nowadays, Volstagg is seen more as a boastful braggart and bumbling oaf than the warrior he’s remembered to be. Along with Hogun and Fendral, Volstagg is the comedic, and often hungry, third member of the Warriors Three. Together, they have served many missions alongside the Mighty Thor. In many of these situations, Volstagg’s considerable clumsiness more often won the day than his fighting savvy.

The Warriors Three – Hogun, Volstagg, and Fendral
When Loki brings Ragnarök to Asgard, Volstagg’s allies, Hogun and Fendral, are almost immediately killed. Thor would find a significantly thinned and starved Volstagg hiding from the horrors going on around them. Inspired by Thor, he would join the final battle before being killed along with the last of the Asgardians.
The whole of the Warriors Three are reborn after Thor discovers them residing in the bodies of relief workers. The trio would be vital to Asgard’s victory of the Skrull attack on Asgard during the Secret Invasion. When Thor mistakenly kills his grandfather and is banished from Asgard, the Warriors Three leave as well, outraged by the decision to exile their Lord. Soon after, Volstagg decides to quench his thirst for adventure and heads out of his Oklahoma home to follow in the footsteps of Thor to help defenseless humans.

Volstagg, the Adventurer
Volstagg’s adventure soon would hit a horrific snag. Inexperienced at using his powers in Midgard, Loki targeted the big man as being the best option to use as Osborn’s excuse to attack Asgard. When ambushed by the U-Foes, Volstagg’s full use of his powers led to the deaths of several thousand people in Chicago’s Soldier Stadium. With Osborn’s connection with the Hood (who the U-Foes are allied with) and the payment for the attack kept under guard, the public is only shown what dangers the Asgardians can bring to the people of the world. Shortly after the tragedy, the full force of H.A.M.M.E.R. came crashing down on Asgard already leading to several Asgardian deaths. Now teamed up with Frontline’s Ben Urich, Volstagg is on the run trying to get back to Asgard to face his peers for the destruction he’s wrought.
